A case study that illustrates Big Idea Group’s microbusiness process is the Rebound Driveway Marker. The Rebound is a spring-based, spike-mounted rod that easily inserts even into frozen ground and bounces out of the way when hit by cars or snowplows (see www.ReboundDrivewayMarker.com).
This invention was presented to BIG in 2008 by Arra David, an inventor and entrepreneur. BIG liked the concept but decided to validate it through consumer online testing. Consumers did suggest some improvements, but on the whole, responded very positively to the idea of a better solution.
Based on this feedback, BIG decided to partner with David. Investing seed capital of $50,000, we formed a microbusiness to launch the Rebound. Key to our microbusiness strategy was getting to market quickly and cost-effectively. That meant focusing on critical functions such as design, sourcing, and marketing, while outsourcing other tasks such as manufacturing, warehousing, and fulfillment. Also vital was keeping development on track by continually seeking the input of consumers and retailers.
The result was that we were able to launch the Rebound in just nine months. First year sales are expected to reach approximately $2 million, rising to $3-5 million in revenues within a few years.
